20 years of the Joint M.Sc. in Applied Geophysics

This year marks the 20^th anniversary of the IDEA League Joint M.Sc. in Applied Geophysics, offered jointly by TU Delft, ETH Zurich and RWTH Aachen University. To celebrate this milestone, on Friday, August 28, 2026, graduates and their families, new and past students as well as active and former staff members of the three partner universities came together at the MUSEON in The Hague for a full day of science, reunion and celebration.

The day started with a scientific symposium, which included a panel discussion on the role of artificial intelligence in geophysical education. The symposium was followed by the graduation ceremony, where two GIM students, Varsa Vass and Marijn Beugelsdijk, received their diplomas. Both completed their M.Sc. theses at GIM (see thesis projects):

• Varsa Vass: “Effects and mitigation of data gaps in time-lapse joint inversion for alpine permafrost monitoring”
• Marijn Beugelsdijk: “Optimized three-dimensional geoelectrical imaging and geological modeling of an anhydrite-bearing zone above a road tunnel”
