From heat waves to gravitational waves: Two new research projects

GIM is happy to be part of two new exciting research projects. In TREAT we will study the influence of recent heat waves on mountain permafrost using a quantitative combination of multiple geophysical methods. This will include methodological developments in petrophysical joint inversion and field campaigns in the Alps in collaboration with partners from Switzerland, Austria and Norway.
In the recently funded project ET-Plan, we will contribute to reduce the planning risk of the Einstein telescope, a concept for a third-generation gravitational wave detector. With many partners from Aachen, Bochum, Hamburg and Karlsruhe, we will improve the characterization of fault locations in the target regions and develop a comprehensive subsurface model leveraging upon existing and newly acquired geological and geophysical observations.
