Final EASYGO Training Week 2024 in Zurich & Bedretto

The final training week of the 4^th EASYGO project was hosted at ETH Zurich between July 8-12, 2024. This concluding event was marked by engaging keynote presentations with interesting keynote speakers including the ETH rector Prof. Günther Dissertori. The speakers covered a broad range of scientific topics spanning both academia and industry offering deep insights into the future of geoenergy research. Project manager Dr. Maren Brehme also outlined plans for EASYGO 2.0 discussing the ambitious vision to make EASYGO permanent at the partner universities within IDEA League.

Throughout the week, early-stage researchers (ESRs) presented their final findings through a series of presentations and poster sessions, sparking lively discussions and collaborative exchanges. GIM researchers Hagen Söding and Andrea Balza , presented their work with insights on what is to come towards the final chapter of their PhDs. The week culminated in a memorable final dinner set against the picturesque backdrop of a boat cruise on Lake Zurich, where we also celebrated the end of this three year project with cake.

The group then embarked on a scenic bus ride to Airolo, where they spent their final two days. During their stay, they visited the BedrettoLab - Bedretto Underground Laboratory for Geosciences and Geoenergies, a cutting-edge facility designed for advanced research on the behavior of deep underground systems during geoenergy stimulation. Some ESRs had the unique opportunity to work with data generated from experiments conducted at the lab. Dr. Marian Hertrich, the manager of BedrettoLab, provided the team with an insightful overview of ongoing projects and essential safety instructions. The group also toured part of the tunnel during a hydraulic stimulation experiment observing data from the pressure gauges and microseismic monitoring systems. Additionally, some attendees took on a challenging hike to the peak above the tunnel, rewarded with stunning views of the Airolo valley.
