XV Einstein Telescope Symposium in Bologna
Posted on 2025/06/06

This year, the XV Einstein Telescope Symposium was held in Bologna with active participation by our GIM researchers Alexander Jaron and Marc S. Boxberg working in the ET-Plan project. The Einstein Telescope is a next-generation gravitational wave detector that is currently being planned and will be located in Europe. The detector will be built at an approximate depth of 300 meters below the surface and will consist of 10 to 15 km long tunnels. The conference took place between May 26 and 30 and offered a lively exchange between the individual working groups involved in the planning of the Einstein Telescope. We are involved in the site characterization of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine and Lusatia, performing active seismic and electrical resistivity tomography measurements to help find an optimal site.
Marc S. Boxberg presented his work on rock characterization by ultrasonic transmission measurements on rock samples from drill cores of recently drilled boreholes.
Our colleagues Tom Niggemann and Niklas Nippe, experimental physicists from Achim Stahl’s group at RWTH Aachen University, also presented our joint work on the characterization and mitigation of noise induced by wind turbines and were awarded a poster prize for this work. Congratulations!
